Walking Blindly in the Dark. June 1st 1847hrs

Word of what had happened spread quickly, and it wasn’t long before people started showing up. Knights, ladies, and all manner of performers and festival attendees, they clustered in along the edges of the field, their questioning whispers traveling up and down the lines. Thankfully, several of the Game Masters arrived around the same time, including Camden and Emmeline Lanne. Camden immediately ordered the surrounding tents pushed back, while Emmeline and the others arranged a perimeter guard to keep anyone else from wandering in.

Oliver and the rest of the Fenway Knights gathered together just outside of the Paxton tent, making use of the nearby tables to see to their wounded. Collectively they looked like a walking advertisement for Band-aid and gauze, but I knew in my heart it could have been worse. The Green Knight hadn’t killed anyone, thank God, and I spotted Thomas Michael Lucas, his red medical bag slung over his shoulder, as he moved among the knights, overseeing the few volunteers with medical training. His face was grim, but I suspected most of the knights’ wounds would require little more than a bandage, a couple ibuprofen, and a few weeks rest. No one was in any immediate danger of bleeding to death, and in situations like this, you have to force yourself to look on the bright side.

I found Warman sitting on the grass, an ice pack pressed against the side of his head.

“Hey, big guy,” I said, kneeling down beside him. “You alright?”

He nodded and didn’t quite hide his wince. “Nothing a stiff drink won’t fix. Did we just get our butts kicked?”

“Depends. Why do you ask?”

“Cause it kind of feels like we did.”

A flash of pain shot up my arm, supporting his theory, but I shook my hand and forced my face to stillness. “Maybe, but we’re only at the halftime mark. There’s a lot more game ahead.”

“Beverly?”

I shook my head, and Warman let out a long breath. “Darn it.”

“The police are on their way. I’ve already put out an APB. If she’s out there, we’ll find her.”

Warman nodded, but he didn’t seem convinced. “You don’t think he’ll hurt her, do you?”

“I hope not. He seemed pretty intent on taking her to see the Lady of the Lake.”

“Did he say where?”

“The edge of the realm or some such. He wasn’t too specific.”

Warman sighed. “That’s not much help.”

“Best I can do at the moment. Hopefully, we’ll know more soon. In the meantime, we need to get out of here.”

“What?”

“Trust me.” I stood up and motioned to get Oliver’s attention. The knight captain whispered a few last words to the pixie girl, Sarah, and then headed over. He was nursing a large welt on the back of his head, but his eyes were focused, and his jaw was set in a determined line as he came up beside us.

“Sergeant Mayfield. Mr. Warman. You two okay?”

“As well as can be, but we need a favor.”

“Oh?”

“The police who show up are going to need someone level headed to talk them through what happened.
